A "free and fair" election is a fundamental standard used to determine if an election is democratic. It ensures that the government derives its legitimacy from the will of the people. While "free" and "fair" are often used together, they refer to slightly different aspects of the process.

Free and Fair Elections

Election observation is the process where independent parties monitor an election to assess whether it meets international standards for being free, fair. The goal is to discourage fraud, expose irregularities, and provide an unbiased evaluation of the election's legitimacy.

Election Observation

Voter education is the process of providing citizens with the basic information and knowledge they need to participate meaningfully in an election. It ensures that voters are not just able to vote, but that they are ready to vote confidently and correctly.
